ABOUT US

HISTORY

Bob Johnson, founder of R.M. Johnson & Sons Jewelers of Salem , stumbled into the jewelry business as a sales person in a local retail store. He learned the business from the ground up. He founded the company in 1978 as a jewelry repair service that he operated out of his parent’s basement. There he began applying his creativity and artistic talent to jewelry making. The business grew into a retail jewelry store in 1992. In 1996, a decision was made to purchase a building and move the store into the new, larger facility, which is our current Salem location.

In 1998 Bob was honored to receive the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce’s “Small Business Person of the Year” award. R.M. Johnson & Sons was recognized as being a store worthy of the distinction of becoming a member of the American Gem Society based on it’s high ethical standing and recently they were nominated for the Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics.

Bob’s wife Jane decided to leave a sales position with another company to join the family business full-time as president in 1998. Jane handles all administrative duties as well as marketing and sales responsibilities for the store.

In addition to being a busy entrepreneur and parent,  Jane also finds the time to give back her community in a variety of ways. Jane is a member of Salem’s City Council  and is an active Rotarian.  R.M. Johnson & Sons also supports community youth sports programs as well as a number of local charities and the Jewelers Charity Fund for Children.
